Carbonite is a desktop client for the eponymous online backup service. It can back up your computer to online servers in two different ways. There is an automatic backup which grabs files from a predefined list of places on your computer and uploads them automatically. Or you can manually select the files to be backed up. If you select this last option, you are left with only one way to select the files - you need to right-click on them and add them to your Carbonite backup. There is no window where you can add folders, you have to use the Windows Explorer for this - which is not bad, since I always want applications to have shell integration.
After a successful backup, files can be restored to your computer via the system tray icon. There is a recover mode that downloads files for you and there also is a search window, with advanced search functions (date created, date modified, name, size, etc).
Carbonite also allows you to set the CPU priority. If you give it a low priority, your computer will prioritize other operations before Carbonite's, which will improve system performance, but will also slow down your backups. All in all, this client is pretty advanced and easy to use. However, like with all online backup services, the backup process is painfully slow, taking whole weeks to upload a few gigabytes. This application itself is free, but the service is not. They are currently offering a 15-day trial for new users. |
